ถังเก็บน้ำพลาสติกชนิดติดตั้งบนดิน มีรูปทรง สี และลวดลายหลากหลาย และยังมีรุ่นที่มีนวัตกรรมยับยั้งเชื้อแบคทีเรียด้วย แต่ถังเก็บน้ำพลาสติกไม่มีขาตั้งเหมือนถังเก็บน้ำสเตนเลสจึงต้องติดตั้งบริเวณพื้นผิวที่เรียบสม่ำเสมอ และมีการลงเสาเข็มสั้นเพื่อรับน้ำหนัก มีรูถ่ายน้ำอยู่ด้านข้าง จึงอาจเกิดตะกอนในถังได้เล็กน้อย
วิธีการดูแลรักษาถังเก็บน้ำบนดิน วิธีการดูแลรักษาถังน้ำที่ติดตั้งบนดินสามารถทำได้ง่ายๆ เพียงทำความสะอาดทุก 6 เดือน เพื่อให้น้ำในถังยังคงความสะอาดใสไร้ตะกอนและสิ่งสกปรก วิธีทำความสะอาดทำได้ดังนี้ 1. ปิดวาล์วท่อน้ำที่ต่อเข้าถังพักน้ำแล้วเปิดรูระบายบริเวณก้นหรือด้านข้างถังระบายน้ำในถังให้หมด 2. ใช้แปรงขัดคราบและตะกอนในถังและฉีดน้ำไล่ตะกอนออกให้หมด 3. ใช้น้ำยาคลอรีนหรือคลอรีนผง ผสมน้ำในถังตามสัดส่วน (องค์กรอนามัยโลกระบุให้มีความเข้มข้นไม่เกิน 5 มิลลิกรัม/ลิตร) แล้วแช่น้ำค้างไว้ภายในถังเป็นเวลา 1 คืนเพื่อฆ่าเชื้อโรค หลังจากนั้นปล่อยน้ำคลอรีนออกจากถังน้ำให้หมด (สามารถนำน้ำนี้มารดน้ำต้นไม้หรือล้างรถได้ เพื่อเป็นการประหยัดน้ำ) 4. รอให้แห้ง แล้วเปิดวาล์วให้น้ำไหลเข้า จึงใช้งานได้ตามปกติ
โดยยี่ห้อที่นิยมใช้สำหรับการติดตั้งบนดินได้แก่ ถังเก็บน้ำยี่ห้อ Cotto และยี่ห้อ DOS

ถังเก็บน้ำคอนกรีต สามารถหล่อขึ้นรูปได้ตามต้องการ ควรทำระบบกันซึม เลือกวัสดุปิดผิวที่ลดการสะสมของแบคทีเรีย แต่เนื่องจากมีรูปทรงที่จำกัดจึงควรเตรียมพื้นที่หน้างานและโครงสร้างให้พอดีกับขนาดที่เลือกใช้ และต้องมีโครงสร้างที่แข็งแรงรองรับถังเก็บน้ำพลาสติกชนิดติดตั้งใต้ดิน ทำจากวัสดุที่สะอาด ปลอดภัย ทนทาน สามารถรับแรงกดและแรงกระแทกได้ดี แต่มีรูปทรงที่จำกัด ต้องเตรียมโครงสร้างบริเวณใต้ดินไว้รองรับเช่นกัน แต่สามารถติดตั้งได้รวดเร็วกว่าชนิดคอนกรีต การเลือกขนาดถังมีวิธีคิดง่าย ๆ โดยคิดจาก ค่าการใช้น้ำโดยเฉลี่ย 200 ลิตร ต่อคนต่อวัน x สมาชิกในบ้าน x จำนวนวันที่ต้องการสำรองน้ำไว้ใช้ เช่น สมาชิกในบ้านมี 4 คน ต้องการสำรองน้ำไว้ใช้ 3 วัน วิธีคำนวณ คือ 200 x 4 x 3 = 2,400 ดังนั้นควรเลือกใช้ถังที่มีขนาดไม่น้อยกว่า 2,400 ลิตร เป็นต้น
วิธีการดูแลรักษาถังเก็บน้ำใต้ดิน ผู้ใช้จะต้องคอยระวังไม่ให้อุปกรณ์ในถังชำรุดเสียหาย เช่น ฟุตวาล์ว ลูกลอย และคอยสังเกตมิเตอร์น้ำว่าทำงานขณะไม่มีการใช้น้ำหรือไม่ ในการทำความสะอาดตัวถัง สามารถทำได้ดังนี้ 1. เริ่มตรวจสอบอุปกรณ์ต่างๆ เช่น ฟุตวาล์ว วาล์วลูกลอย ว่ามีส่วนที่ชำรุดหรือไม่ 2. ปิดวาล์วมิเตอร์น้ำประปา เพื่อไม่ให้น้ำเข้าถัง และเปิดใช้น้ำในบ้านเพื่อระบายน้ำที่ค้างในถังให้ลดลง 3. ปิดเบรกเกอร์ของปั๊มน้ำ เพื่อไม่ให้ปั๊มทำงานขณะกำลังล้างถังเพื่อความปลอดภัย 4. ใช้อุปกรณ์ขัดล้างทำความสะอาดคราบสกปรกภายในถังให้ทั่ว หลังจากนั้นใช้ไดโว่สูบน้ำออกจากถัง พึงระวังอย่าสูบน้ำออกจนหมด เนื่องจากดินรอบถังมีแรงดันมากจนอาจจะดันถังให้เกิดความเสียหายได้ 5. เปิดวาล์วน้ำประปา ปล่อยให้น้ำเข้าไปในถัง และทำความสะอาดอีกครั้ง หรือทำซ้ำจนกว่าน้ำในถังจะใสขึ้น แล้วใส่คลอรีนน้ำ หรือคลอรีนผง ผสมตามสัดส่วนเพื่อฆ่าเชื้อโรค หลังจากนั้นปล่อยน้ำคลอรีนออกจากถังจนหมด (สามารถนำน้ำนี้มารดน้ำต้นไม้หรือล้างรถได้) 6. เปิดวาล์วให้น้ำไหลเข้า จึงใช้งานได้ตามปกติ โดยยี่ห้อที่นิยมใช้สำหรับการติดตั้งใต้ดินได้แก่ ถังเก็บน้ำยี่ห้อ Cotto และยี่ห้อ DOS
