ปูนซีเมนต์สำหรับงานโครงสร้าง จะใช้ “ปูนซีเมนต์ปอร์ตแลนด์” เป็นวัตถุดิบหลักในส่วนผสม สำหรับงานก่อสร้างบ้านใหม่หรืออาคารโดยทั่วไปจะใช้ปูนซีเมนต์ปอร์ตแลนด์ธรรมดา แต่หากมีการเร่งงานก่อสร้าง หรือมีความจำเป็นต้องซ่อมคอนกรีตโครงสร้างบ้านจะใช้ปูนซีเมนต์ปอร์ตแลนด์ให้กำลังอัดสูง สำหรับบ้านหรืออาคารที่ปลูกสร้างใกล้ทะเลควรใช้ปูนซีเมนต์ปอร์ตแลนด์ทนซัลเฟตสูง เพื่อไม่ให้เกลือซัลเฟตทำลายเนื้อคอนกรีต ส่วนงานโครงสร้างที่ต้องสัมผัสกับดิน/น้ำหรืองานโครงสร้างที่มีความหนามาก เช่น ตอม่อขนาดใหญ่ ฐานรากขนาดใหญ่ หรือกำแพงกันดินที่มีความหนามากๆ ควรใช้ปูนซีเมนต์ปอร์ตแลนด์ดัดแปลง ส่วนงานโครงสร้างคอนกรีตขนาดใหญ่ หรือคอนกรีตหลา (Mass Concrete) เช่น งานโครงสร้างเขื่อน ควรใช้ปูนซีเมนต์ปอร์ตแลนด์ประเภทเกิดความร้อนต่ำ เพื่อลดความเสี่ยงที่อาจเกิดการแตกร้าวขึ้นเนื่องจากความร้อนในการทำปฏิกิริยาของคอนกรีต
ปูนซีเมนต์สำหรับงานก่อ ฉาบ เท จะเป็นปูนซีเมนต์ที่มีกำลังอัดต่ำกว่าปูนซีเมนต์ปอร์ตแลนด์ จึงไม่เหมาะกับงานโครงสร้างที่ต้องรับน้ำหนักอาคารในส่วนต่าง ๆ โดยสำหรับ งานก่อ จะใช้ “ปูนซีเมนต์ผสม (Mixed Cement)” ซึ่งมีคุณสมบัติเหนียวลื่น ยึดเกาะอิฐและผนังได้ดี แห้งตัวพอเหมาะ ไม่ยืดหดตัวมาก ส่วน งานฉาบ นั้นจะใช้ “ปูนซีเมนต์ Masonry (Masonry Cement)” เนื่องจากมีคุณสมบัติพิเศษ คือ มีความเรียบเนียนสูง เนื้อละเอียด เหนียวลื่น ยึดเกาะได้ดี ฉาบง่าย อุ้มน้ำได้ดีจึงช่วยลดการดูดซึมน้ำของผนังอิฐ และลดการแตกร้าว
การนำปูนประเภทนี้ไปใช้งาน จะต้องผสมกับทราย และ น้ำ ในสัดส่วนที่เหมาะสมกับแต่ละประเภทงานก่อนนำไปใช้ ตัวอย่างเช่น
งานก่ออิฐ จะมีปูนซีเมนต์ และ ทรายหยาบ (ทรายหยาบตามคุณภาพมาตรฐาน มอก. 598) ผสมกันในอัตราส่วน ปูนซีเมนต์ : ทราย ประมาณ 1 : 2.5 ถึง 1 : 3
งานฉาบปูน จะใช้ปูนซีเมนต์ และ ทรายละเอียด (เม็ดทรายขนาด 0.5 – 1.5 มม. คุณภาพมาตรฐาน มอก. 1776) ในอัตราส่วน ปูนซีเมนต์ : ทราย ประมาณ 1 : 2.5 ถึง 1 : 3 ซึ่งจะเหมาะกับการใช้เป็นปูนฉาบขั้นแรก ซึ่งช่างปูนนิยมเรียกว่า “ปูนเค็ม” เพราะมีสัดส่วนของปูนซีเมนต์อยู่มาก ทำให้ยึดเกาะกับผนังได้ดี แต่ก็จะหดตัวได้มากและแต่งผิวยากเช่นกัน สำหรับปูนฉาบชั้นที่สองหรือชั้นสุดท้าย จะนิยมใช้อัตราส่วน ปูนซีเมนต์ : ทราย ประมาณ 1 : 3 ถึง 1 : 4 เรียกว่า “ปูนจืด” เนื่องจากปูนจืดมีทรายมากกว่า จึงหดตัวน้อย และแต่งผิวง่ายกว่าปูนเค็ม จึงเหมาะกับการฉาบผิวหน้าเพราะไม่ค่อยแตกร้าวหรือแตกลายงา
ปูนมอร์ตาร์สำเร็จรูป/ปูนซีเมนต์สำเร็จรูป จะเป็นปูนที่มีส่วนผสมของปูนซีเมนต์ หินบดละเอียด และสารพิเศษ โดยมีการควบคุมสัดส่วนการผสมและคุณภาพของวัตถุดิบให้มีความสม่ำเสมอและสะดวกต่อการใช้งาน เพียงผสมน้ำตามสัดส่วนที่กำหนดก็สามารถใช้งานได้ทันที โดยไม่ต้องผสมทรายหรือสารเคมีเพิ่มเติม ซึ่งจะแยกประเภทตามการใช้งานเลย ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ปูนมอร์ตาร์สำเร็จรูป/ปูนซีเมนต์สำเร็จรูปสำหรับงานก่อทั่วไป งานฉาบทั่วไป งานฉาบละเอียด งานเทปรับพื้น งานซ่อมอเนกประสงค์ ฯลฯ แต่มีข้อจำกัดคือ ปูนแต่ละประเภทจะใช้ได้เฉพาะสำหรับงานนั้น ๆ ไม่สามารถนำไปใช้อย่างอื่นได้ ตัวอย่างเช่น ปูนมอร์ตาร์สำเร็จรูป/ปูนซีเมนต์สำเร็จรูปสำหรับงานก่อทั่วไปจะใช้สำหรับงานก่อผนังอย่างเดียว ไม่สามารถนำมาฉาบผนังได้
